What is Body Contouring after major weight loss?

After a dramatic weight loss achieved by either exercise and proper nutrition, by medical treatments, or as the result of bariatric surgery many people are left with loose, sagging skin they are unhappy with. For some, after they have reached their goal weight, they find that they still don’t have the healthy body image or shape that they desire. For those people, body contouring surgery after weight loss, can be the answer. It can produce dramatic improvements for those whose weight loss has resulted in excess sagging skin of the face, arms, abdomen, back or legs. In general these surgical procedures can help to reduce remaining excess fat and skin that has developed in multiple areas of the body. These body contouring procedures can be the rewarding and final phases to having a healthier, more proportionate body that provides self-confidence and enhances your body image.

Where do I begin?

A consultation with Dr. Jennifer Geoghegan is the first step to learning more about how body contouring can help you achieve better health and happiness with your appearance. This consultation is designed to educate you in a non-pressured environment about your options. This discussion will include:

  • Listening to your goals and receiving an evaluation of your individual case
  • Reviewing the surgical and non-surgical options available
  • Discussing likely outcomes of your contouring procedures and the associated possible risks or complications
  • Receive a customized treatment plan recommended by Dr. Geoghegan

Body Contouring Options

Because each individual is unique, a customized treatment plan following your weight loss will be developed to meet your specific needs and focus on those regions to be treated. These plastic surgery procedures may include:

  • Facelift: designed to reduce sagging skin of face, jowls and neck
  • Breast lift: to correct flattened or sagging breasts
  • Tummy tuck: to remove the hanging excess skin over your abdomen
  • Lower body lifts: helps correct sagging skin of the abdomen, buttocks, groin and outer thighs
  • Medial thigh lift: designed to help correct sagging of the entire thigh
  • Brachioplasty (arm lift): correct sagging skin and excess fat of the upper arms

Body Contouring procedures can be a great adjunct to achieving your goals after significant weight loss, but you must also be accepting and understand several things. First, all body contouring procedures require incisions to remove the excess skin and fat. These incisions, in many cases can be extensive, the length and pattern required will be unique to you. Techniques will be utilized to attempt to hide these incisions where they can be covered with clothing, but this is not always the case. Second, body contouring is often performed in stages, this is done to optimize your safety and results. Lastly, the results you achieve are usually long lasting, but you must work diligently to maintain a stable weight and fitness regime so that your results are maintained.
